NBA Free Agency: Lakers should say GOODBYE to Austin Reaves already?

Austin Reaves' impressive performance during his breakout season has put him in a position where the Los Angeles Lakers might struggle to meet his contract demands. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, there will be at least one team that offers Reaves a contract exceeding what the Lakers are willing to pay. The Lakers initially signed Reaves to a two-year contract as an undrafted free agent in August 2021, and he is now set to become a restricted free agent this summer, allowing the Lakers to match any offers he receives from other teams.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium recently noted that the Lakers' maximum offer is currently just above $50 million over four years. However, teams with available cap space could potentially present Reaves with an offer sheet far surpassing that amount. In March, Danny Leroux of The Athletic pointed out that the Gilbert Arenas provision in the collective bargaining agreement enhances Reaves' negotiating leverage. This provision limits the first-year salary an opposing team can offer a restricted free agent with limited NBA experience but allows for substantial raises in subsequent years.

Leroux provided an example in which Reaves would earn less than $12 million in each of the first two years, followed by a significant jump to $36.85 million in the third year, resulting in a total of $98.7 million over four years. This creates an intriguing dynamic for both the Lakers and potential suitors, as it becomes an all-or-nothing situation. The Lakers can pay Reaves more than they can offer themselves, but only if another team is willing to tie up their cap space while the Lakers decide whether to match the offer.

Adding to the complexity is the Lakers' future direction. While they have reached the Western Conference finals after revamping their roster at the trade deadline, they face several decisions regarding free agents such as D'Angelo Russell, Dennis Schröder, Lonnie Walker IV, and Malik Beasley. Additionally, Rui Hachimura, who has been shooting 54.5 percent from three-point range in the playoffs, will also be a restricted free agent alongside Reaves this summer. Despite previous speculation about Kyrie Irving potentially joining the Lakers, The Athletic's Tim Cato reported that the Lakers are "uninterested" in signing the point guard.

Reaves has emerged as a crucial contributor in head coach Darvin Ham's rotation this season, averaging 13.0 points per game and shooting 39.8 percent from three-point range during the regular season. His playoff performance has been even more impressive, with 16.4 points per game and a 43.2 percent success rate from beyond the arc in 14 games. As negotiations unfold, Reaves' contract situation adds further intrigue to the Lakers' offseason plans and the team's future direction.

NBA Trade Rumors: New York Knicks want Sixers superstar Embiid!

The New York Knicks have reportedly expressed interest in trading for Philadelphia 76ers center and reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, should he become available. Sources have indicated since midseason that Embiid is a player the Knicks are monitoring, and the 76ers' recent second-round playoff exit has only intensified their interest, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.

While there is currently no indication that the Sixers have plans to trade Embiid, their playoff struggles this season, culminating in a seven-game series loss to the Boston Celtics, have raised questions about their future direction. Following their playoff elimination, the 76ers parted ways with head coach Doc Rivers, and further significant changes could be on the horizon. NBA executives reportedly expect star guard James Harden to opt out of his contract with the Sixers and potentially return to the Houston Rockets in free agency, as reported by Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

If such changes occur, the Sixers would be left with a core featuring Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Tobias Harris, but with limited options to bolster a roster that has consistently fallen short of advancing beyond the second round of the playoffs, despite six consecutive postseason appearances. While a rebuild may be a consideration, trading a player of Embiid's caliber would likely be viewed as a last resort.

Embiid, 29, is coming off the best season of his career, securing his first MVP Award. He led the NBA in scoring for the second consecutive year with 33.1 points per game, along with 10.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.0 steal per game. However, Embiid's performance in the playoffs was hampered by injuries, as he averaged 23.7 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks, and 2.7 assists, shooting 43.1 percent from the field. His struggles were particularly evident in the 76ers' Game 7 loss to the Celtics, where he shot just 5-of-18 from the field for 15 points.

The Knicks have shown promise as a rising team, reaching the playoffs this season with a 47-35 record and advancing to the second round before being eliminated by the Miami Heat. The addition of guard Jalen Brunson elevated their performance, and players like Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Quentin Grimes had productive seasons. However, to become legitimate championship contenders, the Knicks arguably need another superstar, and Embiid would be an ideal fit.

Embiid is under contract for at least the next three seasons, with a player option for 2026-27, so the 76ers are unlikely to feel pressured to trade him. The Knicks could potentially offer a compelling package of draft picks and young players, but the Sixers would need to consider the implications of moving Embiid and potentially stepping away from immediate championship contention. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the Sixers are prepared to entertain such a significant move.

NBA Trade Rumors: Chris Paul to Spurs is a possibility?

The San Antonio Spurs are thrilled after winning the NBA Draft Lottery, granting them the chance to select Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick next month. Wembanyama, in turn, seems excited about his new home and the fresh start it offers. This anticipation aligns with the possible mindset of Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul, who may be seeking a new destination in the upcoming offseason.

Although Paul, at 38, has two years remaining on his contract with the Suns, only a portion of his salary for this season is guaranteed, while all of his money next year isn't guaranteed. CBS Sports has proposed the idea of the Spurs as a potential new team for Paul. They suggest that if the Suns aim to part ways with Paul, the Spurs should absorb him into their cap space. With only one guaranteed year on his deal, Paul could serve as a valuable mentor to young stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Devin Booker, as attested by CBS Sports.

Given their substantial cap space, the Spurs can easily accommodate Paul's contract. The addition of a veteran of Paul's caliber could significantly benefit a young team, particularly one with an emerging talent like Wembanyama. Throughout his 18-year NBA career, Paul has consistently left a positive impact on the teams he has been a part of.

He guided the New Orleans Hornets to the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, propelled the Los Angeles Clippers to multiple deep playoff runs, brought the Houston Rockets to within one game of the NBA Finals before suffering a severe injury, astounded the world with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and played an instrumental role in the Phoenix Suns' 65-win season. With Wembanyama and the rising Spurs, one can only imagine the potential accomplishments Paul could achieve.

A trade involving Doug McDermott and Zach Collins for Paul would likely satisfy both teams' current needs. While Paul may represent a short-term investment, and the financial commitment to him might impede the opportunity to sign a prized free agent to a substantial four-year deal, the Spurs do not necessarily need to vie for an NBA championship in the upcoming season. Although such an outcome may be far from expected, having Paul on the team would undoubtedly bring them closer to contention.

NBA Trade Rumors: Golden State is hesitant to trade Jordan Poole because...

The Golden State Warriors' title defense last season fell short as they exited the playoffs after just two rounds. Among the contributing factors to their disappointment was the underwhelming postseason performance of scoring guard Jordan Poole.

The Warriors lacked off-the-dribble creation from players other than Stephen Curry, and Poole seemed like the best candidate to address that gap. However, his inefficiency on offense, shooting poorly from all areas of the court (34.1% FG, 25.4% 3PT, 76.5% FT), made it difficult to overlook his defensive struggles.

Considering the need to restructure the team around Curry, trading Poole appears to be a logical option. However, there is hesitancy within the organization to move him due to his age (23), potential for growth, scoring ability, and concerns about diminishing his trade value.

Ultimately, the league's evaluation of Poole will play a significant role. Will another team view him as a valuable asset for their offense? He showcased promising skills during the regular season, averaging a career-best 20.4 points per game and demonstrating his ball-handling, pull-up shooting, and creativity around the rim. However, his recently signed four-year, $128 million extension, which begins next season, makes him an expensive gamble for any team to acquire.

Parting ways with Poole would not benefit the Warriors. They would not only have to find a replacement for his production but also maximize the salary slot he occupies. With budget constraints tightening around their aging core, every dollar spent matters. While Curry remains capable of leading a championship-caliber team, the Warriors have evident work to do in elevating the rest of the roster to championship-contending level.

NBA Trade Rumors: Memphis Top 3 TRADE TARGET!

The Memphis Grizzlies have a promising young core, with Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson, and Desmond Bane already locked in for the future. However, to take the next step towards contention, the Grizzlies need to find the right supporting cast to complement their star trio. Despite being an ace defender and emotional leader, Dillon Brooks was recently traded, leaving a hole on the wing for the Grizzlies. Therefore, the Grizzlies need to pursue offseason trade targets to help them reach the next level.

Alex Caruso

One potential trade target is Alex Caruso, a versatile defender who anchored a top-five defense in Chicago this season. Despite being just 6-foot-5, Caruso is one of the best defenders in the league, able to guard both on and off-ball effectively. With Jaren Jackson, the Grizzlies could form a formidable defensive duo capable of neutralizing some of the league's top offenses.

Paul George

Another option for the Grizzlies is to pursue Paul George. Although a less plausible deal, George would provide the Grizzlies with the top-end talent they lack. He has led teams to the playoffs as both the alpha on the Pacers and as Kawhi Leonard's sidekick on the Clippers. Adding George to a lineup that includes Morant, Bane, and Jackson would make the Grizzlies one of the deepest and most complementary foursomes in the league.

The Grizzlies have the assets to pursue the next superstar to demand a trade, with five tradable first-round picks and a roster of promising young players. While acquiring a superstar like George may be unlikely, the Grizzlies should explore all their options to find the right players to complement their young core.

OG Anunoby

One potential target that has been linked to the Grizzlies in the past is OG Anunoby. He is a better defender and scorer than Brooks and would provide a veteran presence in the locker room. Acquiring Anunoby would raise the ceiling for the Grizzlies, but it remains to be seen whether they are willing to give up what's necessary to land him or whether the Toronto Raptors are open to exploring his trade market.

Overall, the Grizzlies have a bright future with their young core, but they must find the right supporting cast to reach the next level. Pursuing offseason trade targets like Caruso, George, or Anunoby could help the Grizzlies take that step towards contention.

NBA Trade Rumors: Dallas, Chicago and the other teams linked to Phoenix star center!

Deandre Ayton, the Phoenix Suns center, may find himself with a new team next season as there are reports that the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers, and Charlotte Hornets are possible landing spots for him in an offseason trade. ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported that the Suns are expected to "aggressively explore" an Ayton trade, and that Ayton would welcome a fresh start with another franchise. An anonymous NBA executive cited by Sean Deveney of Heavy.com named the four teams as potential suitors for Ayton if he becomes available.

While a swap of centers between Ayton and the Bulls' Nikola Vučević was mentioned, it was reported that the Suns are not looking to spend big money on a center if they trade Ayton. Another possible deal mentioned was Ayton going to the Bulls for veteran wing DeMar DeRozan, who is signed through next season. An anonymous exec added that Dallas, Portland, and Charlotte are also potential suitors, but that there is no big trade market for centers at the moment.

Ayton was selected by the Phoenix Suns with the first overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft out of Arizona, and he has spent his entire five-year NBA career with the Suns so far. Although Ayton has not yet achieved superstar status with no All-Star selections or All-NBA nods during his career, he has been fairly productive, averaging 16.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 block in 303 career regular-season games. This season, Ayton averaged 18.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 0.8 blocks, but his play dipped during the playoffs.

During the playoffs, Ayton's numbers fell to 13.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.0 assist, and 0.7 blocks in 10 games, and he lost playing time to Jock Landale while missing Phoenix's season-ending Game 6 loss due to a rib injury. Two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić dominated Ayton during the Suns' second-round playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets, averaging 34.5 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 10.3 assists in six games.

It remains unclear what the Suns could receive in exchange for Ayton given his hefty contract, but he is just 24 years old and could benefit from a change of scenery. With the Suns' superstar duo of Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, they will likely explore all options this offseason to find the right mix around them and improve their chances of vying for a championship next season.

NBA Trade Rumors: LA Clippers Top 3 Trade Targets!

The LA Clippers are on the hunt for a trade this offseason, and the team has its sights set on a number of top players. Here are the top three trade targets of the Clippers.

3. Doug McDermott

Coming in at number three is Doug McDermott from the San Antonio Spurs. With the Clippers looking to improve their three-point volume, McDermott would be a great fit. The veteran sharpshooter has finished six out of his nine NBA seasons with a 40-plus percent splash rate. He's also approaching the final season of his contract, making him a logical trade candidate.

2. James Harden

Number two on the list is 10-time All-Star James Harden, who could be an interesting addition if the Clippers look to move Kawhi Leonard or Paul George. Harden has enough playmaking and off-ball ability to make it work, and his addition would prevent the franchise from tying its championship hopes to Russell Westbrook. The ideal trade for both sides could be a deal in which Harden and impending free agent Paul Reed are moved for George.

1. Julius Randle

The number one trade target for the Clippers is Julius Randle from the New York Knicks. With Randle not having a concrete future with his current franchise, he could be a valuable asset to the Clippers. Tom Thibodeau's appetite for quality defenders could prompt him to trade Randle if it meant landing Kawhi Leonard or Paul George. Additionally, the Knicks adding Kawhi or PG would make them far more difficult to defend.

The prior trades on the list have been moves that paired Kawhi with a new dance partner in LA, but this move would send Kawhi to New York. The Knicks will likely view his stoic disposition as ideal in a market that has rattled multiple players.

The Clippers are making moves and are poised to be a strong competitor in the NBA next season. Fans will have to wait and see which of these trade targets becomes a reality for the team.
