NBA Free Agency: Lakers is targeting a controversial Center?

The Los Angeles Lakers have been in need of frontcourt depth due to a recent lack of players in the position, and Meyers Leonard was a player they had reportedly been interested in signing for the rest of the season. According to sources, the Lakers had worked out Leonard in January before he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Leonard agreed to remain with the Bucks for the rest of the 2022-23 season. Leonard has only played a few minutes with the Bucks, averaging 4.0 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in six appearances. While the Lakers traded for Mo Bamba to address their frontcourt depth earlier in the season, he has been out due to injury, leaving the Lakers with a thin rotation. With the absence of both Bamba and LeBron James, the Lakers will need to rely on their role players to secure a spot in the play-in tournament.

Meyers Leonard has been a controversial figure in the NBA since March 2021, when he used an anti-Semitic slur during a video game live stream. This led to a suspension and $50,000 fine from the NBA, as well as Leonard being traded from the Miami Heat to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the offseason. Leonard was then waived by the Thunder and signed with the Bucks in February 2023. Despite his on-court contributions, his actions off the court have caused many to criticize the teams that have signed him.
